Philip LeBlanc and Cathy Nealon celebrate ten years of owning and managing The Country Picker
Online PR News – 27-March-2017 – Philip LeBlanc and Cathy Nealon, former city dwellers and corporate executives, made the move to the country. Inspired by rural living in Northern New Hampshire, they decided to buy a local moving and storage company.
LeBlanc and Nealon moved from New Jersey to New Hampshire in 1998. At that time, LeBlanc was the vice-president and general manager at Currier Trucking Corp. in Gorham, NH. Nealon had taken an early retirement at Citibank.
“Due to the closing of seventy percent of the paper mills in North Country in 2006, that operation folded and I was looking for another opportunity,” said LeBlanc. “Cathy and I loved living in New Hampshire. While I was looking for opportunities outside the area, we decided to de-clutter our home in Glen and put the house on the market. We contacted a local moving and storage company, The Country Picker, and put some items into storage,” said LeBlanc.
They soon learned that The Country Picker, Inc, in Conway, NH, established 1982, was for sale. “While we were not looking to buy a Moving Company, but the opportunity appeared, we did want to stay in the area, if possible. Four months later in June 2007, we completed a purchase and sale agreement and took over the business,” said LeBlanc.
LeBlanc and Nealon met some challenges, initially. “Within three months of the purchase, the housing market bubble burst, and we found ourselves in a tough situation. Residential Moving services are dependent on houses selling, and as the housing market slowed to a crawl, so did our business,” said LeBlanc.
LeBlanc and Nealon, each with over 25 years of corporate experience, put their know-how together. “In our former careers, our respective companies not only weathered three recessions, but thrived through them. We put our heads together and decided that expanding into long-distance moving was our way to survive, and hopefully thrive. We hired an experienced driver that had worked for Allied Van Lines and bought a truck suitable for long-distance hauling. The plan worked,” explained LeBlanc. In 2010, The Country Picker bought another local company, Tom Daly Moves in Tamworth, NH. “Our expansion grew the service area from local and regional to long-distance moves, including the western United States,” said LeBlanc.
Since 2007, The Country Picker has tripled the size of the company, and performs over 650 moves per year. Their storage services have also expanded to now offer a modernized storage facility with climate control and vaulted storage. This year they are celebrating 10 years in business.
